Maddie Perry has been on a fast track to a career in aviation since she graduated in 2012. After finishing her studies at Kincumber High School, Maddie moved to Brisbane and received a Bachelor of Aviation after three years of study. She is currently studying at Bankstown Aerodrome, Sydney and is working towards obtaining her Diploma of Aviation (Commercial Pilot Licence) at Bassair Aviation College. She has already achieved her Recreational Pilot Licence, and Private Pilot Licence.
Maddie says, “You don’t need to have a Bachelor of Aviation to become a pilot, that was just a personal choice. Most employers will want you to have studied Mathematics and Physics, so I recommend taking these subjects in the HSC.” Maddie took mathematics in her final year at Kincumber High School, but she didn’t take physics, and she says it would have helped in retrospect.
Maddie says she loved school, and enjoyed social events, learning and being with her friends every day. Her favourite subjects were mathematics, P.E and art, and she says her final year of high school was a fun, memorable year. She says if she could speak to her fifteen-year-old self, she would say to, “Really embrace this time in your life because it goes by so quick. You have your whole life to work, pay bills and have children. You have very little responsibility at the moment, so enjoy it. Don’t stress so much in year twelve. It’s one of the most fun years of your life … until you start flying planes, of course.”

Before Maddie began her long journey to becoming a commercial pilot, she had never met a pilot. She says this is rare, “Most people who aspire to become a pilot have a relative or friend who is a pilot. There wasn’t a particular person who inspired me.”
Maddie says a successful person is someone who is genuinely happy and doing what they love. She says, “I feel successful when I work really hard for something, and achieve it.”
